Necklace, Red African Amber and Ghana glass King beads
This necklace is made of rare red African amber, called copal, unearthed in a semi-fossilised state in the coastal region of Zanzibar. It was used for bride purchases, one large bead being worth four cows. It also contains 18th century glass Krobo, Bodom or King beads from southern Ghana which were believed to have magical powers.
